A DIFFERENT KIND OF ROAD RAGE? UNION COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA SHERIFF GOOD OLE BOYS Category: News and Politics
I'm writing this blog because there are so few times we can tell the world our troubles, but with our new technology it is getting easier to do so.
I live in the small town of Waxhaw North Carolina and while traveling back to Waxhaw through another small town, Monroe I encountered a most unusual type of road rage.
As I was traveling through Monroe on US Hwy. 74, I had to turn left on Franklin St. that heads to downtown Monroe. When you turn onto Franklin St., the double lane ends into one lane. During rush hour it is extremely difficult to merge left on this road and if you don't, you'll become stuck.
A truck was on the lane to my left and an SUV was just ahead of me. I'm in a SUV as well and am wondering what to do at this point. I speed up to get past the truck and in turn am right upon the SUV. Unbeknownst to me the truck was speeding up along side me. I start to merge thinking this guy will cut me some slack but he was determined to keep me out of the lane. By this time, I'm already getting halfway into the lane when all of sudden I hear the blaring of a horn. He lays into it and gives me a dirty face with a middle finger. Then he tailgates me and starts talking on a radio. I'm thinking what's up with this guy, so I cut you off, why can't you cut me some slack still?
This guy is relentless, he is on my rear all the way through town. I go through a yellow light and think surely he'll get caught and I'll lose him. Not a chance, he goes right through the yellow/red light and still right on my tail.
This guy looked like he worked in construction and was driving a nice older truck. I'm wondering to my self, if I have to stop I know he'll be right on me. So, I just keep going like I was going, travelling through Monroe and onto US 75 toward Waxhaw, NC. He gets caught behind a slow moving car and I'm up ahead of him about a mile or so when all of a sudden a North Carolina Sheriff's patrol car gets in behind me. At this point I'm thinking what's the chance that a patrol car would come out of nowhere and show up behind me? I'm doing the speed limit and just minding my business.
The sheriff deputy puts his lights on and pulls me over. He comes up to my window, which is down and tells me they've had several people call in about my erratic driving. I tell the sheriff the only erratic driving was when I was running out of road on Franklin and some guy in a pickup wouldn't let me over and started going nuts. At this point the guy in the pickup approach us and parked behind the sheriff's car. Then I start seeing all these sheriff's cars out of nowhere and they stop all around where we were parked on the highway. All in all there were 4 sheriff's cars parked along the highway on both sides with their lights on. The sheriff that pull me over, Mr. McCarver then asked for my license and registration. I handed it to him and he walked back to the truck and then all of the other sheriffs came up to the guys truck.
I sat there in my vehicle for about 15 minutes while three of the sheriffs were talking to the guy in the truck and the fourth was in his car writing. There were cars backed up and having to cross the center line of the highway to pass and this was during everyones drive home. Finally Mr. McCarver came back up to my window and told me he was giving me a ticket for running a red light and aggressive driving. I asked which one of them witnessed me do these infractions? He then proceeded to tell me it was the guy in the truck. He happened to be a sheriff deputy himself and claimed I broke these laws. I told the officer that the only law I broke was thinking someone would have the courtesy to let me move over from where the road ended. He then proceeded to tell me I didn't have any right-away that I broke the law. He then told me I better shut-up and leave.
I left, but with a real bad taste in my mouth regarding the Union County North Carolina Sheriffs Department. I was basically a victim of Road Rage in the worst kind. I happened to cut off an Off-Duty Union County Sheriff's Deputy named Billy Osteen, who had a bad case of chapped rear and decided to make me pay for it...with the taxpayers money. I plan to contact my attorney and I'm sure it will be an expensive ride but I plan to fight this indignant travesty of justice.
